Lesson Plan Topic: Conventions of Gothic Literature.

Objective: Students will be able to identify conventions of Gothic Literature; Recognize conventions in classic gothic pieces; Make connections between stories and convention similarities; Apply conventions of Gothic Literature when creating an original Gothic Literature piece.

Preface/Teacher Notes: It is never more evident than during this time of year that horror and fear seem to fascinate us in a hard to explain way.  Or is there a good explanation? What is it about the emotion that horror brings out in us that has so many people coming back for more? Whether it’s in horror films, haunted houses, or gothic literature, the fascination that humans have with fear goes beyond Halloween. To celebrate this spooky time of year, let’s look into the conventions that make up Gothic Literature and the psychology behind this spooky phenomenon.

Step 1: Have students read the article “Why Do We Like Watching Scary Films?” from Psychology Today to gain a bit of an understanding behind the possible science behind this fascination.

Step 2: Students will watch the Youtube video on the collection detailing the conventions of Gothic Literature. Encourage students to take down notes during the video so they can easily go back to them throughout the lesson.

Step 3: Now that students know the conventions of Gothic Literature, have them browse the classic gothic literature collections. Students will:

-Choose at least 4 pieces of literature from the site.

-Identify all of the Gothic Literature Conventions for each story.

-Students will find the similarities among each story.

Step 4: Students will read the article “Why Are There Horror Movies” from Psychology Today to gain a deeper understanding how/why we get such a thrill from unpleasurable emotions.

Step 5-Making the Connection: Using the knowledge in from both articles, students will discuss with the class which elements of the 4 researched stories they found to be the most terrifying/eerie and why. Students will be expected to use the convention terminology as well as the psychological details highlighted in each article to create/support their points.

Step 6 (If Time): Using the Gothic Literature Conventions and evidence discussed in Psychology Today, students will write their own short horror story. Students must be able to clearly identify the Gothic Lit conventions in the story.
